June 2024

Highlights

  1. Atmospherics: The lagging effects of mobilization and the resumption of U.S. arms deliveries have
reversed the course of Ukraine’s nearly catastrophic deficiencies in men and material
from earlier this year. That said, Monday’s devastating missile strikes against Kyiv
exposed the dire state of Ukraine’s dangerously depleted stock of air defenses.
  2. Emerging Tech: The brainchild of Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s minister of digital transformation, the "People's Drone" project teaches Ukrainian citizens to build FPV drones at home.
  3. Battlefield Trends: Victory Drones, an NGO supporting drone training and manufacturing in Ukraine, runs a number of drone trainings for the Ukrainian military. It should be noted, however, that there is no standard, codified Ukrainian drone pilot training program. There are also efforts to educate the civilian population in drone use. For its part, Moscow says it will need hundreds of thousands of drone operators. Russian FPVs have about a 50% success rate. That number is also generally reflective of the Ukrainian side. However, there are significant variations, depending on the different EW threats at different areas of the front lines, as well as the area’s physical
terrains — such as hills or trees that might interfere with FPV control signals.
